David Bowie: Handmade A3 Vietnamese Print
Info: A3 sized – approx 30cm X 39cm. This print is a handmade item created and printed in Vietnam on Dó Paper.
Dó paper is made from bark of the Dó tree, which can be found in Vietnam’s northern region. Having first appeared in the 13th Century. This type of paper has been used widely in Vietnamese folk art, especially in Dong Ho paintings.
The production process can be long and complicated but generally involves 4 distinct stages
1. The bark is soaked in limewater for 3 months.
2. The black outer bark is husked off and ground by pestle and mortar before being blended with a viscous substance made from a plant belonging to the Verbenaceae family
3. This mixture is diluted to form a slurry. A bamboo mould is then dipped into the vat of slurry and removed.
4. Paper fibres adhere to the mould in a thin sheet that is then pressed, dried, rolled and dried again. The final product must be soft, light and durable.
The paper is then hand printed on.
